What is a Wet Belt?

Differing from timing belts, or cambelts, wet belts are located internally and lubricated by the engine’s oil, in a similar way to a timing chain.  Over the years several major manufacturers such as Citroën, Ford, and Peugeot have fitted wet belt technology in some of their engines because they are lighter than timing chains and create lower friction than traditional timing belts.  They were also intended to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.

Wet belts were originally designed to last for up to ten years or around 120,000 miles, but they have been known to fail prematurely, and this can be caused by impurities in the engine oil which creates excessive wear.  This is an area of concern if your vehicle uses wet belt technology, so it’s recommended that if your vehicle has covered around 50,000 miles you should consider getting it inspected without delay, to reduce the risk of an unexpected failure needing extensive engine repairs.
